A Year in Paarl
A I Perold's
A Treatise
on Viticulture
A I Perold (1880-1941) was South Africa's first Professor of Viticulture and Oenology. He dedicated himself to improving the quality of grapes for wine, brandy and the table. He studied wine and brandy production in Europe, imported more than 60 varieties to the Cape and bred new ones. Perold said this book “is intended to serve both the student and the practical grape-grower. There are in it technical passages that will appeal more to the student, e.g. the chapters dealing with the biology of the vine, its external and internal morphology, the theory of grafting. My remarks on the practice of viticulture, such as those dealing with the propagation, manuring and pruning of the vine, the production of table grapes for export, will, it is hoped, assist the practical grape-grower as well as the student.” This is a newly typeset reprint, not a photocopy. Text on the 712 pages have been aligned to match the original pagination so any external references to pages in the Treatise will be valid in this edition
Available in paperback and hardback editions. 712 pages

Dr Perolds report on his Paarl experiments 1915 - 1916 reprinted with glossary, introduction and brief biography. Fascinating historical document on viticulture for wine and table grapes, wine and brandy making.
no idea who you are referring to, but as a total and complete guess, and only because I think I heard it mentioned recently, is it New Zealand?
ReplyDeleteThe Karoo?
ReplyDeleteTee hee.
OK, voted.
Good guesses, but not close.
ReplyDeleteThe Karoo is in South Africa, and this vineyard is definitely not in SA.
New Zealand is a good guess -- there are a lot of Pinotage vineyards in NZ, but this one is not in NZ
Spain is mye guess..
ReplyDeleteSpain is a great guess. I was contacted some time ago by a Spanish winery that wanted to know where they could buy Pinotage vines to plant and I put them in touch with a nursery. But they were not allowed to plant Pinotage because it wasn't approved in their DOC area.
ReplyDeleteAFAIK there are no Pinotage plantings in Spain.
Is it Lake Breeze winery in British Columbia?
ReplyDeleteUm, Canada...
ReplyDeleteGood guess, Richard. There are two Pinotage commercial vineyards in British Columbia and one vineyard in Ontario (see http://www.pinotage.org/2006/10/ontarios-first-pinotage-vintage-this.html ) , but this vineyard isn't in Canada
Let me try another guess. Lovingston Winery in Virginia?
ReplyDeletegermany?!
ReplyDeleteLovingston is a good guess, Richard: It is one of three Pinotage wineries in Virginia and since they've all been featured in this blog it wouldn't be too much of a surprise. This vineyard is in a place never mentioned anywhere AFAIK in connection with Pinotage
ReplyDeleteCru -- there were persistent rumours of Pinotage in Germany but I never could find any. AFAIK there is no Pinotage in Germany.
My guess would be Chech Republic...
ReplyDeleteHi Liberty
ReplyDeleteI've been to the Czech Republic a few times recently and they have some interesting grapes there....
But they don't have any Pinotage and this photo was not taken anywhere near there.
Hi Peter,
ReplyDeleteLooking at the soil - is it Israel?
Good competition! Am dying to know the answer!
Cheers
Nick
south of France (Languedoc/Roussillon) maybe ?
ReplyDeleteNick
ReplyDeleteGood guess in Israel -- there are two commercial wineries growing and making Pinotage in Israel, but since their wines have already been featured here, the guess is not correct.
g74 - thats a canny guess. There are quite a few South African winemakers who have bought vineyards in Southern France, but I think they were excited by the ancient Grenache, Carignan and Syrah vines there, and AFAIK none of them have thought of planting Pinotage there
Switzerland?
